TIPS FOR HAVING A GREAT FIRST CLASS

WHAT IS GRAPPLING / JIU JITSU ?

Grappling encompasses many disciplines with close hand to hand combat and the use of submission holds and chokes.

So what is the difference between Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and No Gi?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a form of self defence/martial art where the smaller person through the use of technique and leverage can defeat a larger less experienced opponent. Although it is known as the “gentle art” physical prowess is encouraged. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is performed in a traditional Gi which plays a fundamental role in many of the techniques.

No Gi Jiu Jitsu/Submission Grappling utilizes the same principles of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu without the uniform and grips it offers. It is often faster paced and can closely resemble wrestling. Certain techniques used in this form would be considered illegal within tradition Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition.

Both of these forms compliment one another.

We believe to be to a well rounded fighter one must train in all of the disciplines of “grappling”.

Preta Academy aims to blend and draw from traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, No Gi, Submission Grappling, Wrestling, Sambo and Judo.
